Known as the oldest and most unique town along the greater Grand Strand is Little River. If you travel north on Highway 17 through Horry County, Little River is the last South Carolina town you will pass through before you cross the state line. It is about 20 miles north of Myrtle Beach. It is situated on the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway. Originally, called “Mineola” by Native Americans, the English translation of Little River became its name. In early history it hosted the famous and the infamous. It was said that as an out-of-the-way, protected harbor, pirates, smugglers, blockade-runners, and bootleggers found refuge here. George Washington also dined here while traveling on his Southern Tour in 1791. Little River is known for fresh seafood, historic centuries-old live oak trees, the annual Little River Blue Crab Festival (held in May), the annual Little River Shrimp & Jazz Festival (held in October), the La Belle Amie Vineyard, and it is one of the few communities on the Grand Strand where a slower pace of life still exists. Little River is home to charter and commercial fishermen and shrimpers. Anglers can take a boat and have your choice of short party-boat and fishing trips close to shore, or you can spend a full day fishing in deep waters of the Gulf Stream. Even though it is a quaint fishing village, Little River is a short drive to all the famous attractions, golf courses, shows, shopping outlets, and entertainment the Grand Strand has to offer. Although, gambling is illegal in South Carolina, Little River has two Las-Vegas-style casino boats known as the Big “M” Casino, where tourist and locals can go twice a day, every day, for casino gambling excursions into international waters where gambling is legal.
