Vacation Gear Murrells Inlet SC
Just 10 miles south of Myrtle Beach you can discover the fishing village of Murrells Inlet, also known as the Seafood Capital of South Carolina. People who summered here in the 1800s travelled by steamboat and docked at the Wachesaw River Landing. The steamboats were known for their excellent food and several cooks from the steamboats settled in Murrells Inlet, giving the area its reputation for savory cuisine long ago. Murrells Inlet was officially named by the post office in 1913 but its history began writing itself long before then. Although hushpuppies where perfected here, it was once the lair of the infamous pirate Blackbeard, but today it is any outdoorsman’s dream. You can spend your day parasailing, jet skiing, scuba diving, kayaking and paddleboarding, or on a day-long chartered deep sea fishing excursion. You can dine at a waterfront restaurant such as Creek Ratz, The Claw House, Dead Dog Saloon, Wahoo’s Fish House, Wicked Tuna, Bovine’s and Drunken Jacks just to name a few. The restaurants offer Lowcountry cuisine, fresh seafood, and fine steaks all prepared by award-winning chefs, to burger joints where you can throw your peanuts on the floor. Murrells Inlet has a wide selection of restaurants for any taste. After dark, the locals favorite Marshwalk comes to life. It is a half-mile wooden boardwalk along natural saltwater estuary. Here, live music will stream from multiple eateries and establishments along side with a gorgeous view. Not only does Murrells Inlet offer waterfront dining, charter fishing and live nightly music, but you can also partake in sightseeing tours, shopping, seasonal events, or stroll on the Veterans Pier. Also in the area, is Brookgreen Gardens This attraction has received 25 awards and honors like the top 10 Public Gardens in the US by Coastal Living Magazine, one of the Top Five Favorite Gardens by Southern Living Magazine, and the Charlotte Observer named Brookgreen “One of the seven wonders of the Carolinas”, and in 2018 Brookgreen was awarded #9 in Best Botanical Garden Category from USAToday 10 Best. Huntington Beach State Park is home to another National Historic Landmark, Atalaya Castle. The castle was built between 1931 and 1933. It boasts thirty rooms laid out around three sides of a courtyard and was situated on the ocean within an estate that was originally over 9,000 acres of land. They used part of that acreage to build a sculpture garden, known as the recently referenced Brookgreen Gardens. Originally, the castle was a winter home for the Huntington family, but during World War II the Huntington’s let the United States Air Corps us it as a Barracks. In 1960, 2,500 acres of the estate was leased to the state of South Carolina and Huntington State Park was formed who now keeps the house and grounds. If you travel during September, you can attend an art festival held at Atalaya Castle.
