70 miles north of Charleston and 25 miles south of Myrtle Beach sits the picturesque seaside town of Pawleys Island. Pawleys Island is known as one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast and the “original beach vacation”. Pawleys Island was settled in the 1700s by families of rice planters who owned plantations on nearby rivers. There are 12 residences remaining in Pawleys that date form the late 1700s to the mid-1800s. Pawleys Island is known for its laid-back vibe, carefree, shoeless lifestyle. You can go crabbing, fishing, visit the four-mile-wide stretch of beautiful beaches, kayaking, paddle boarding, indulge in delicious cuisine, shopping, or attend some of America’s premier golf courses just across the causeway. All Pawleys courses are part of the well-known Waccamaw Golf Trail. These courses include Pawleys Plantation, True Blue, Willbrook Plantation Golf Club, Heritage Club, Tradition Club, Founders Club, Litchfield Country Club, River Club, and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club. Many of these courses have earned national accolades. There are a wide variety of dining options in Pawleys Island, including bakeries and coffee shops, casual dining, fast food, fine dining, gourmet shops, ice cream, and pizza. Some eateries to try are Pawleys Island Bakery, Landolfi’s Italian Bakery & Deli, Anything Foz & Coffee Shop, Island Bar & Grill Pawleys, Captains John’s Seafood Grill, Austin’s Cabana Café, Pawleys Island Tavern (The PIT), Rustic Table, and Perrone’s Fine Food & Wine to name a few. Southern Living wrote about Pawleys Island in 2021, saying: “This South Carolina coastal town is known for its hand-woven hammocks, upon which we’d like to hang a while, but it makes sure to keep you interested with pristine beaches, surf-worthy waves, great seafood, Lowcountry marshland, and easy-going attitude (hence, its affinity for hammocks).

The lack of commercialism is something that draws people to the quiet town, especially considering it can be found between bustling neighbors, Charleston and Myrtle Beach.” Also, in 2021, Garden & Gun readers declared Pawleys a “Favorite Southern Beach Town.” Pawleys Island both on and off the island itself has no shortage of activities to make your vacation fun and exciting. While you’re there be sure to visit The Hammock Shops Village, The Island Shops, and the Village Shops which include one-of-a-kind specialty shops, boutiques, and souvenir stores all in unique settings along walkways or under ancient oaks. If you’re looking for live music, many of the popular restaurants on the mainland offer live music. Only a few minutes away you’ll find Brookgreen Gardens. This attraction has received 25 awards and honors like the top 10 Public Gardens in the US by Coastal Living Magazine, one of the Top Five Favorite Gardens by Southern Living Magazine, and the Charlotte Observer named Brookgreen “One of the seven wonders of the Carolinas”, and in 2018 Brookgreen was awarded #9 in Best Botanical Garden Category from USAToday 10 Best. Huntington Beach State Park is home to another National Historic Landmark, Atalaya Castle. The castle was built between 1931 and 1933. It boasts thirty rooms laid out around three sides of a courtyard and was situated on the ocean within an estate that was originally over 9,000 acres of land. They used part of that acreage to build a sculpture garden, known as the recently referenced Brookgreen Gardens. Originally, the castle was a winter home for the Huntington family, but during World War II the Huntington’s let the United States Air Corps us it as a Barracks. In 1960, 2,500 acres of the estate was leased to the state of South Carolina and Huntington State Park was formed who now keeps the house and grounds. If you travel during September, you can attend an art festival held at Atalaya Castle. Pawleys Island offers the Habcaw Barony and Hopsewee Plantation for history and tours.
